Age Appropriate Materials
This Tuesday, we will finally vote on whether Elmbrook Schools will continue to have these books as required reading in classes and I imagine there will be a LOT of people coming to show support of keeping this perversion in front of the children of the District.
These books attempt to shock and normalize perversion to the reader by inserting child pedophilia, child sodomy, and rape. Teachers that are clearly not qualified to discuss these sensitive topics with these children are actively speaking out and fighting to keep these books available to teach in their classroom. If these sensitive topics need to be discussed, then a team of professional counselors and therapists with experience in sexual trauma should be a part of the conversation and ensure we aren’t unnecessarily hurting children that have been impacted by sexual trauma.
Based on the last board meeting, the deciding vote will come down to Scott Wheeler, who was not in attendance at the last board meeting. Scott has shared his conservative values and his deep faith in God through his religion and local church and I imagine he will make the right decision to remove these books as required reading.
Lastly, as you can see in the last school board meeting, Mary Wacker has decided to double down on her vitriol towards me and it is palpable in the meetings. I have continued to be respectful of her role and treat her with professional kindness and dignity. I just don’t agree with her approach and philosophy.
Sadly, in the last meeting, she rendered her position as an elected School Board member meaningless and wants to pass on doing her job as elected official to an unelected employee.
In the last meeting, she stated, “We hire a district administrator and administrative team and we trust that they will bring in instructional excellence in the form of our teachers to do that work. They are the experts.” (Mary Wacker July 2024 board meeting)
She is correct in saying we hire and vote on every single contract, teacher and Administrator that is hired by Elmbrook Schools. We also vote on the large dollar spending items, curriculum and many other items. As elected board members, we have to VOTE on the curriculum that is presented by the Administrative team because that is OUR job and our vote is saying that we approve of the curriculum to be taught and believe it is necessary to best educate the Elmbrook children.
If Wacker took her role seriously and truly cared about the children, she would recognize that it is our responsibility as elected school board officials to vote and approve all curriculum, primary resources and the many, many other decisions we make as a school board. We need to ensure that the material being taught is excellent. We must ensure that the material being taught is what the community wants for the children. We don’t relegate our decisions that we are required to make as an elected official to an unelected individual.
If our only job was to hire Administrators and the Administrative Team, then why is this material even being presented to the school board to vote on?
In case you missed my last email, here is the recap from the previous meeting:
Last night at the Elmbrook School Board Meeting, Kathy Lim, Linda Boucher and myself were fighting to protect the children of Elmbrook Schools from being forced to read sexually explicit materials in the classroom. It was clear that we awakened a sleeping monster of those that want to allow Elmbrook Teachers to use sexually explicit books to teach AP Literature. The message is beginning to get out in the community that the children of Elmbrook Schools deserve the right to an education free from the progressive agenda that want to teach our kids about orgies, sodomy of children, pedophilia and child rape.
Watch the full discussion here that occurred on July 8th.
In summary, the teachers at Elmbrook Schools that teach AP Literature have 21 books to choose from to successfully teach the children of Elmbrook Schools. Two of those books on the list contain highly sexualized material that should be reserved for parents or Human Growth and Development classes – The Handmaid’s Tale and The Kite Runner and you can click on the title for a synopsis of the explicit material. The Handmaid’s Tale also has available a graphic novel that may entice the children to read as well.
The staff at Brookfield Central successfully teach this class with a high success rate on the AP exam and the number one private school in the state teaches this class without using either of these books.
Last night, the staff of Elmbrook schools confirmed that these books are not required to be read to be successful on the exam.
So, why would we require students taking this class to read this material?
Three board members have expressed their support for this material – Jean Lambert, Mary Wacker and Preetha Kurudiyara.
As a board member, we have already heard from OVER 20 members of the community supporting the idea of keeping these books in the curriculum and ONLY 2 members of the community supporting this decision. We need to hear from more. Would you consider emailing the board and expressing your desire to keep these books out of the curriculum?
